ALVES, Elizabeth. TEACHERS’ ONGOING PROFESSIONAL TRAINING IN SCHOOL. THE USE OF NEW TECHNOLOGY AT UNIVERSITIES TO ENHANCE TEACHERS’ QUALITY IN THE CLASSROOM. Investigación y Postgrado [online]. 2003, vol.18, n.1, pp.36-45. ISSN 1316-0087.

Today’s society changes, and the hope that education can help overcome economical and social limitations forces universities that train teachers to make innovations in their programs in order to ensure broad coverage with high-quality participation, linking pedagogical practice to university education. In this way teachers can research their own practice and become builders of pedagogical knowledge. The progress occurring in communication and information technologies makes it possible to use programs with more interaction. Consequently, this article presents the progress we have made in the research project, whose basic objective is to develop a comprehensive program for ongoing training of teachers in the school that ensures their active and ongoing participation in the collective construction of pedagogical knowledge. It is conceived in terms of an action-research methodology that makes it possible to progressively construct materials and strategies, in accordance with needs and expectations with a view to transforming educational conditions. It is pursued through interactive virtual (multimedia) and face-to-face workshops, as well as a University/School Network. This network is comprised of university professors (UPEL) and educational centers, and is intended to ensure advice and follow-up in the teachers’ pedagogical practice. This methodology yields possibilities of covering a wide geographic area and a large number of teachers without sacrificing quality, because it offers high levels of interaction for individual and collective teachers’ self instruction and a fluid communication between classroom teachers and university professors. In doing so the research results are systematized to rapidly improve the program and contribute to the development of pedagogical thinking.
