This article examines the current reading comprehension section of aptitude test applied in Venezuela. The objective was twofold. First, to determine the relationship between the skills evaluated by the reading section and the results obtain in 2004. Second, the impact this section of the test has had on Venezuelan high school students. It was an ethnographic investigation conducted by two researchers that have being involved in the development of such tests. In order to obtain the data, the in-depth interview method was applied to a sample of six subjects: four students, two from a private institution, and two from a public one; and two specialists that have work in the design, implementation and evaluation of the test. At this time, preliminary results are being offered on the skills the test assess based on the results provided by the OPSU (Office for the Planning of the University Sector) for the year 2004 and the perception of the interviewed students and specialists.
