Abstract
RUBINO, Antonio Nicolás. Challenges of the management and the leadership of the higher education. Investigación y Postgrado [online]. 2007, vol.22, n.2, pp.147-163. ISSN 1316-0087.
This paper is the result of a modest revision of the literature about some current tendencies in management and leadership within the Latin American context. These tendencies have been produced as a consequence of a reductionist approach, based on a positivist managerial training that has not allowed us to conceive them as parts of a systemic process, with a lot of interrelations with the environment and society. Management and leadership in higher levels have to take place in four key areas. Nevertheless, in the practice, those areas are interconnected, and the definition of the boundaries among them is very hard. In this regard, leadership is mentioned along with elements inherent to the organization and the environment, the adoption and development of the infrastructures, strategic planning based on the environment and organizational analysis. Then, the conclusion drawn is that putting into force these practices is deeply related with the skills, values and principles that leaders must bear and put in practice.
Keywords : Management; leadership.
