PACHECO, Lourdes C. We planted the seed of culture: Teachers and the construction of the mexican rural school. Investigación y Postgrado [online]. 2013, vol.28, n.1, pp.87-118. ISSN 1316-0087.

The formation of the Mexican educational system has needed a main character: rural school teachers. By the time the Mexican Revolution finished, the new born State proposed to tasks: to solve the agrarian problem and to solve the educational problem. During Porfirio Diaz’s administration, 78% of the population of the country was unschooled; the president Diaz focused his educational policies on urban areas -even though the majority of Mexico’s population was based in rural areas. Who were the teachers that schooled rural areas? Which were the rural education contributions to the construction of the country? In this study, an approximation to rural teachers is presented; by interviewing, qualitatively, 100 rural teachers from the state of Nayarit- Mexico. The pedagogical implications give the opportunity to bring back rural educational history, as well as the memories of the main subjects of the ones who helped to change the education in Mexico.
