The purpose of this article is to characterize, in theory, the system and style of management of the sport departments of the Venezuelan institutions of higher institution. The study was based on the national, university, and international sport management performance. The used methodology was within a positivist paradigm and the used type of investigation was descriptive- inductive. Intentionally, the selected sample of this study was formed by 30 subjects, who were experts of national and international sport management and were also deans of national universities during 2002-2006. To determine the management system and style, triangulation of the quantitative and qualitative results was used. The conclusion of this investigation arose as the sports directors of the Venezuelan institutions of higher education use the managing system called Strategic Planning and the Authoritarian managing style is used when it comes to university management.
