The student that enters higher education needs to have certain knowledge and to learn strategically. When students have metacognitive resources to regulate the learning-associated processes, they will have a wider cognitive consciousness. During this investigation, the metacognitive profile of 532 students enrolled into the first semester of the different majors offered in the Universidad Nacional Experimental del Táchira was characterized; the dimensions of such study included metamemory, metalanguage, meta-attention, and metacomprenhension. By identifying their profiles, the student needs are known; therefore, new learning strategies can be developed or the strategies the lead towards a comprehensive learning process of the future engineers graduated from the above mentioned university can be strengthened. The results of this investigation indicate the new students have a metacognitive profile that ranges from average to above average; an appropriate ability to handle and control knowledge was shown by these students.
