Resumen

The teaching of mathematics requires continuous attention at all levels of formal education. This research was aimed at verifying if mathematics teachers could improve their strategies through appropriate guides. The experience was carried out with preteen from two institutions. A sample of 144 students was selected, distributed in experimental and control groups. After verifying their levels of knowledge, a set of activities was administered to the experimental group, in a guide specially designed under the tenets of Ausubel. The stages of development of the participants were considered. The results expressed a significant level of superior learning in the users of the guide. The findings highlight the importance of designing activities that are associated with the developmental levels of students at those ages.
