The objective of this work is to formulate a proposal for interpreting changes that have been occurring in food consumption in Venezuela. The referred proposal includes some contributions to the main theoretical currents that have come about from the economic and sociological perspective to analyze this important aspect of food economics. To accomplish this objective, the work was adjusted to the following methodological scheme: In the first part, the state of the debate concerning food consumption in the country is reviewed; next, the principal theoretical focuses, formulated from the economic and sociological perspective to explain consumption, are analyzed pointing out the respective advantages and limitations; and finally, in a third part, taking off from the advantages and limitations of the theoretical focuses analyzed, a proposal for interpreting changes in food consumption in Venezuela is developed.
