This paper undertakes a comparative study of agricultural support instruments in the Andean countries. The analysis was carried out towards the end of 2005 reflecting the agricultural policies situation in the region before the significant changes in agrarian policy that will affect agro-food systems in the sub-region of the Andean countries in the coming years. The crisis of Andean integration and its attempts to develop common agricultural policies is explained by the lack of harmonization of the instruments used in the five countries considered in the study. The need for defining a consistent framework for agricultural public policies in the region is underlined so that national policies do not distort their competence in the area of integration. The usefulness of information systems and of international working groups in the area of agricultural policies in the region is emphasized to favor the transparency of agricultural policies, the assessment of best practices in public management, and the harmonization of instruments of agricultural support
