ALVAREZ URIBE, Martha Cecilia; MANCILLA LOPEZ, Lorena Patricia y CORTES TORRES, Johana Elena. Caracterización socioeconómica y seguridad alimentaria de los hogares productores de alimentos para el autoconsumo, Antioquia-Colombia. Agroalim [online]. 2007, vol.12, n.25, pp.109-122. ISSN 1316-0354.
The objective of this study was to describe the socioeconomic and food security context of homes that produce food for private consumption in Antioquia, Colombia. The sample was calculated with a 95% confidence level and a 3% error, with a random sample (with n=973 homes). A socio-demographic questionnaire was applied for the week before the interview, the amount of disposable food in the home was identified, as well as the contribution of food coming from private consumption. Food security was evaluated with The Community Childhood Hunger Identification Project Scale, validated by Lorenzana and Mercado in poor homes in Caracas. Among the most relevant findings worth mentioning is that parents school level is very low and their occupations are unstable with low salaries. The main job of the head of household was that of agricultural worker; a small portion of the persons that make up the homes work as producers for private consumption due to disinterest in agriculture and as an answer to the low social investment by the State. Food production for private consumption despite having an important food contribution in the home, does not affect food security.
