MARCANO, Miguelina; GARCIA, Moraima e CARABALLO, Luisa. Screening trials with sugarcane varieties at the north eastern region of Monagas State, Venezuela. Bioagro [online]. 2003, vol.15, n.3, pp.221-225. ISSN 1316-3361.
A study was conducted under dryland conditions to evaluate at the north eastern region of Monagas State the performance of eight sugarcane varieties tolerant to the most important diseases of this crop. The varieties CP56-59, V64-10, PR62-258, V68-78, V68-74, PR61-632, B67-49 and V 58-4 were evaluated on a randomized block design with three replications. The plots were 15 m in length, with 3 rows, 1.5 m apart and 12 buds per meter. Ton cane per hectare (TCH) and Pol (%) in cane were determined on plant crop, and first and second ratoon crops. Additionally, ton Pol per hectare (TPH) and efficiency (TCH/TPH) were calculated. On evaluating the three harvests, B67-49 was the best variety, showing the highest TCH and TPH. The average TCH of the two ratoon crops of CP56-59, V68-78 and PR62258 showed intermediate values that overrated in, at least, 20 % the local average yield (50 THC). The varieties V68-74 and V58-4 had low yields per unit area but the greatest Pol (%), showing the best efficiency (6.5 cane unit per sugar unit). On the average of three harvests, all varieties overrated the local average yield.
