The interaction between wheel slip and motion resistance with the soil negatively affects the engine performance of agricultural tractors thus influencing their energy requirements. The objective of this trial was to determine the tractor motion resistance and fuel consumption under different tillage conditions (eight levels) and drawbar loads (three levels) in a layout of treatments in strip-plot. The load levels at drawbar of the test tractor were applied by a braking tractor at several gears combinations. The tillage conditions went from low-tillage to moderate and intensive conventional soil preparation. An electronic instrumentation allowed obtaining fuel consumption (Ch) and specific fuel consumption (CEC) data. Motion resistance (Rk), motion resistance coefficient (k) and motion resistance efficiency (h k) were determined by using a clock dynamometer. The results showed that h k did not vary under the soil tillage conditions, and that Rk as well as k were higher on intensive tillage conditions, followed by the low tillage soil condition. The Ch and CEC obtained were excessive being attributed to the difficulty of the tractor in overcoming the over load, and also to the high wheel slip values, especially on intensive tillage soils.
