Abstract

In Venezuela, the strawberry crop is the great importance to the livelihood of many families in the high areas. However, the planted area, production and quality had been decreased due to absence of technological package and plantation system that allow the successfully of this crop. In this research the growth of strawberry plants cv. Camarosa established in different substrates and treated with gibberellic acid was evaluated. The plants, coming from in vitro culture, were acclimatized for two months and then, potted in plastic containers and placed under a shed at the Campo Lara farm, Brisas de Terepaima, in Lara State, Venezuela. The substrates were vermicompost + sand + rice hull (1:2:2 v/v), coir dust + sand + rice hull (2:1:1 v/v), and mineral soil + sand + rice hull (2:1:1 v/v), and four gibberellic acid doses (0, 10, 20 y 40 mg·L-1) sprayed in an unique application to the foliage. The results showed that the major vegetative growth and production occurred in the plants established in substrates with vermicompost or coir dust. The media doses of gibberellic acid tended to favor vegetative growth. The chlorophyll content in plants was similar among treatments indicating stability of the substrates, and none nutritional alteration. Also, the physical-chemical variables of fruit quality were affected by the treatments, but without showing a well definite trend. The quality of fruit can be considered commercially acceptable.
