Lupinus seeds are used as human and animal food due to their high nutrient content and represent a valuable agricultural resource, although under-exploited, with wide distribution in the Americas. The aim of this study was to determine the morphological and mineral composition, as well as germination, of L. campestris, L. exaltatus, L. hintonii and L. montanus seeds from Puebla State , Mexico. Bulk seed samples of each species were collected to determine color, shape, length, width, thickness, weight of 100 seeds (P100), percentages of seed coat, cotyledon and embryo, imbibition kinetics, germination percentage with and without mechanical scarification, and the contents of N, P, K, Ca, Mg, S, Fe, Cu, Mn and Zn. Species under study showed diversity in morphology seed (color, shape, proportion of seed coat and P100). Seeds were small (P100 from 1.33±0.014 to 1.8±0.002 g) except for L. hintonii (35.51±0.087 g). The low water absorption and low germination percentage of L. campestris seeds were associated with its high proportion of seed coat (33.21±0.02 %). Mechanical scarification improved germination in all species, excelling L. exaltatus (91.6 %). The contents of macronutrients were high for N, P and K, but low for Ca and Mg. Among micronutrients, the contents of Fe and Zn were high, but Mn level was low. L. campestris had the highest Mn content (5.34 mg·kg-1) and L. hintonii the lowest (3.3 mg·kg-1). The identification of these physical and chemical properties will help recognizing the potential of these seeds for development and improvement.
