RODRIGUEZ, Zulime F et al. Eggplant plant response to chemical pruning of roots. Bioagro [online]. 2015, vol.27, n.3, pp.189-194. ISSN 1316-3361.
To reduce the excessive growth and malformations of roots during lifting of seedlings in trays, the vegetative growth of eggplants (Solanum melongena L.) Long purple treated with chemical root pruning was characterized using 50 % copper hydroxide [Cu (OH)2] compared to untreated plants in Cabudare, Lara State, Venezuela. The seedlings were established in germination trays under greenhouse conditions and plants were evaluated the day of transplant and 23 and 49 days thereafter. The experiment was conducted as a split block design with two treatments (0 and 50% of [Cu (OH)2]), and 25 repetition using one plant per plot. The volume of roots, fresh biomass and number of leaves were significantly higher in plants treated with copper hydroxide 49 days after transplantation. Both 23 and 49 days after transplant, root length of treated plants was higher as compared to untreated ones. By applying copper hydroxide a decrease of radical malformations was observed, and a more fibrous, dense and compact root system was generated.
