ALVAREZ-CUELLO, María Rosa e DE NOBREGA, José Renato. Agricultural and demographic characteristics of two farming communities exposed to urban influence of different intensity. Bioagro [online]. 2017, vol.29, n.2, pp.115-122. ISSN 1316-3361.
Over time, agricultural communities in periurban areas suffer reductions in crop area and changes in agricultural activity and land tenure. The objective if this study was to compare based on variables of agricultural activity and demographic characteristics two farming communities located closed to urban centers. Two groups of farmers from communities surrounding the so-called Camino de Los Españoles, but located on different hillsides of the mountain that conforms the Waraira Repano National Park, in the central region of Venezuela, were selected. The data were obtained from a survey applied to 69 farmers, 30 of the northern hillside and 39 of the southern hillside. The results reveal that in the group of the southern hillside, nearest to the main urban center of the area, is lower the percentage of individuals who have resided during all his life in the community (59 vs. 83.3%), who practice agriculture as exclusive job (54 vs. 83%) and who produce for sale (71.1 vs. 96.6%), but the percentage with agricultural financing is higher (27 vs. 10.3%). The median size of their farmland is significantly lower (0.15 vs. 0.51 ha) but the profile of agricultural products of this group is more heterogeneous. It is argued that these differences may be the result of the greater urban influence to which the farm community of the southern hillside has been exposed.
