In this study the molecular identification of peaches cultivated in Venezuela was proposed, information that could be used as a basis for breeding programs. To date, only visual classification has been used, which can be subjective. The present work was carried out to characterize genetic variability in Prunus persica (L.) Batsch cultivated in one of the main Venezuelan production zones. Fully-developed young leaves of different cultivars were collected in commercial orchards. Ten pairs of primers (SSR) were used. Evaluations of the electrophoretic profiles were performed using the similarity index, along with classification and ordering analyzes of the samples. Dendrogram was constructed using the unweighted paired-arithmetic average (UPGMA) method. A close genetic basis within the peaches cultivars was confirmed, and it was possible to discriminate molecularly cultivars, which fairly corresponded to those identified by the producers.
