Small and medium companies provide a great contribution to the economic activity. Such contribution poses the need of characterizing the small and medium companies of the Metal Mechanic sector at the Municipality Iribarren, Lara State, inserted in the program "Net of Productive Innovation of the Metal Mechanic Sector" sponsored by the Ministry of Science and Technology and Fundacite Lara, with the support of the Department of Industrial Engineering of UNEXPO, Vice President Campus at Barquisimeto. The "Information System of the Metal Mechanic Net" was used to collect the data and was applied to 56 companies, representing 76% of the population. The results of the research show that the sector is represented by 87.5% of small industries; 50% have an idling capacity of 60%, with few sales 78.57% directed to the non hydrocarbon sector. I was evident that the main strategies of technological development and innovation should be related to improvements in the quality systems and labor training.
