This paper has the objective to analyze the OPC-UA standard based on their antecedents and features, thereby determining the state of the art on information exchange in the control systems. For that purpose a review and analysis of the possibilities of the standard were carried out trying to locate those more important, according to our approach, to achieve integrated environments of easy design, operation and maintenance. Results and discussion emphasizes how the essence of OPC-UA facilitates and enlarges the work of system integrators and gives administrators, as end user, the possibility to have a more powerful product to control the facilities. Finally, in the conclusions it is stated a need of knowledge of the technology by integrators and administrators to perform a correct selection, at the moment to choose technologies.
