This paper is a documentary work, whose main objective is to establish that theoretical and practical knowledge acquired by human societies continuously since ancient times, have shaped the meaning, application and use of reliability and maintenance, reflecting designs infrastructure, systems equipment, components and processes as well as specific types of asset management and systematically planned actions in time to preserve those assets, minimizing functional failures and improving their operational conditions during the expected life cycles. The methodology is focused on researching and mapping, knowledge and use of reliability and maintenance as a result of a process of continuous and systematic learning. Finally in the forties of the twentieth century, nations, institutions and organizations devote resources to formalize, document and compile knowledge and learning acquired in fault diagnosis, assessment of the reliability and performance of assets, also including improved models management and administration of resources devoted to maintenance. It is concluded that the development of knowledge and use of reliability and maintenance, regardless of the time facilitate improvements in productivity, minimize risk and promote quality of life.
