Predict the useful life of cutting tools is importan in the design and implementation of replacement strategies, as well as in determining the cutting conditions. In the present investigation has been made an experimental evaluation of the surface effect of the burins in high speed steel (HSS) implanted with ions of titanium (Ti) and combined ions of titanium and nitrogen (Ti+N) during the dry finish turning of the AISI-SAE-1045 steel. The methodology consisted in carrying wear repetitive tests with cutting speed of 20 mm⁄min, advance of 0.1 mm⁄rev and cutting depth of 1mm. The flank wear measurements were obtained using the technique of digital microscopy with resolution varying of the images between 50 and 300 microns and processed with ImageJ program in RAW format. The results found with the simple regression analysis (adjusted model equation) showed that the ions of Ti and Ti+N implanted on the surface of the burins increased the useful life of the cutting tool in the flank zone.
