With the advent of the fourth industrial revolution, society has been swept up in a series of transformations driven by these new advances. This influence has been evident in the education sector, more specifically in the field of research, a fundamental process for generating new knowledge. In this context, a literature review was conducted, focusing on the role of digital tools in scientific research within higher education institutions, as well as their potential to enhance these processes that are so relevant to the development of society. It was observed that scientific research within universities is adapting to the digital age and the use of technological tools. Finally, the importance of digital skills among teachers and students is highlighted to adapt to the new times and continue to promote research for the benefit of society.
