FIGUEROA MANNS, María de la Luz. Ecological moral and emotional intelligence: bases for a psychoeducational character model. La Revista Venezolana de Educación (Educere) [online]. 2005, vol.9, n.28, pp.67-76. ISSN 1316-4910.
The capability of current science and technology to improve the quality of life of human beings depends on a joint elevation of the quality of feelings and attitudes that make up the character -the normative aspect of personality- without which it is not possible to be truly useful to humanity. Therefore, the development of a healthy and positive character is an inevitable task for todays education, centered on intellectuality and technological capability. Currently, character is being reassumed, being understood by some authors as the equivalent of emotional intelligence, a concept that is gaining ground, which is being recognized as responsible for success in life. Education in the 21st century, characterized as a critical moment for human race, must return to its roots and complement intellectual and technological development with moral and affective education. From an ecological ethics-moral framework a three-dimensional psychoeducational character model is proposed on category foundations of emotional intelligence found in the relationships with one self, with others, with nature and the transcendent aspect of existence. This proposal aspires to put forward elements that may guide the formative task of the educator every day.
