This article refers to diferent aspects of the renewal movement that went against the mainstream of traditional education. This movement began to develop in Europe and was spread to diferent countries across the world since the end of the 19th century: the New School. Thus, attention is focused in defining this concept and its relation to other similar terms, the main contributions to said movement, its institutionalization and representing institutions, the context in which it appeared and developed, as well as its methods and principles.
