From the evaluation of the book “City and university. University cities and university campuses”, (Ciudad y universidad. Ciudades universitarias y campos universitarios, in Spanish), promoter of the edutropolis concept, together with other documents that refer to the importance of higher education in city life, citizens and community, as well as the value of a city as an ideal entity and scenario for education; the 17 higher education centers in the urban areas of Mérida and Ejido are analyzed in order to know their main academic and logistic features and their possibilities and motivation for interaction. The results let us reach a series of conclusions and suggestions to consolidate the city of Mérida as the edutropolis of Venezuela, through the net structuring of all its higher education centers, to build it as a main support of the multiplicity of educational, social, economical and cultural functions of the city, enriching the quality of life of its citizens and propelling local, state and national development.
