Abstract

RIVAS MEZA, Rebeca E. Evaluating or measuring?. Educere [online]. 2008, vol.12, n.40, pp.19-22. ISSN 1316-4910.

Evaluation is an exciting topic that will never stop being in vogue since it represents one of the fundamental aspects of every teaching and learning process. This is why it is fundamental that we always reflect and start asking ourselves about this valuable process. Here, as we will see, a short reflection-essay is presented about what it meant to the author to have gone through torturing practice of being evaluated about 33 years ago, which works as a frame to emphasize the importance of asking ourselves what we are doing: evaluating or measuring?. This leads to two paradigms found when conceiving evaluation as educational process or taking it as a terminal-punctual factor. It is expected then that each reader discovers its position and at the same time sets itself up to analyze its daily tasks during its teaching performance.

Keywords : evaluation; measuring; process; teaching and learning.
