Abstract

SANCHEZ, Carlos. School, teacher and reading for a revolutionary change. Educere [online]. 2009, vol.13, n.44, pp.99-107. ISSN 1316-4910.

The article denounces the inequity of capitalist schooling, based on the job of teaching to read and write but not producing readers. However, when evaluating its students regarding the written language, schools favor those who belong to privileged sectors of society, who have in their homes the opportunity to develop reading skills, damaging those who come from less privileged sectors. These last ones do not learn how to read and write properly, most of them do not reach a full domain of the written language and go through coursers of low academic performance. The student coming from these sectors are the ones who go for the teaching career, creating a vicious circle: teachers who do not read well teaching student who do not have the required conditions at home to be educated as readers. In order to change this reality, alternative suggestions tending to make basic education more democratic are put forward.

Keywords : skills; reading; performance; teachers.
