CARICOTE, Esther. Sexuality in teenagers with disabilities. Salus [online]. 2012, vol.16, n.2, pp.53-57. ISSN 1316-7138.
Teenage is an evolutive period of transition between childhood and adult age which involves biological, cognitive and socio-emotional changes. It is a period that teenager may involve himself in risk situations for his health as the use of alcoholic drinks, smoking, drugs, sex without protection and car accidents, and others. There exist myths and stereotips around sexuality of people with disabilities. For example, the popular belief establishes that a person with disability loses his sexuality and with it, every possibility of conceiving an individual and familiar life project. On the contrary, sexuality is a dimension of personality that is always present in human behavior and it exists the belief that have a physical health is important for a healthy sexual life and a disability leads to believe that a person with disability as an asexual person. In this sense, it is important to propose the necessity of considering that the presence of a physical impediment in a teenager does not mean to be sexually handicapped because sexuality is not just a biological function but also it is the deepest source of meeting, intimacy and communication of feelings and affection. Therefore, to deprive a human being of something inalienable to his nature results a crime and an attempt to the human rights.
