Breastfeeding provides health benefits to both the newborn and the mother. However some women diagnosed with Diabetes Mellitus (DM.) or gestational DM (DMG) will adopt mixed lactation. The purpose of this research was to determine the attitudes that have an influence on the act of breastfeeding in puerperal mothers diagnosed with DM or DMG during pregnancy at the Diabetes and Pregnancy Unit of the “Dr. Enrique Tejera” Hospital City in Valencia, Venezuela. This quantitive correlational field study had a sample of 40 puerperal women which represented 100%. A Likert scale tool was used for data collection. Validity was obtained by experts’ opinion, and reliability by an Alpha Cronbach of 0.979. 52.5% of puerperal mothers were aged 20-29, 67.5% were diagnosed with Gestational Diabetes, 65% favored exclusive breastfeeding, and 35% mixed feeding. No significant differences were found between the variables. We conclude that attitudes and knowledge regarding ODM and its treatment favor exclusive breastfeeding in puerperal mothers.
