The purpose of this focused ethnography was to explore the beliefs and values of diabetic women with the purpose of unveiling the meanings on breastfeeding practice and to build a theoretical model of breastfeeding care based on these findings, following Madeleine Leningers Sunrise Model. Spradleys ethnographic analysis was used for data processing. For data collection, in-depth interviews were carried out using Leningers observation-participation and reflection method. The sample 12 diabetic women attended at the Diabetes and Pregnancy Unit of Dr. Enrique Tejera Hospital City, from three municipalities of Carabobo State, Venezuela. Six domains were identified: 1) motherly satisfaction as a value is the way to strengthen breastfeeding; 2) inaccurate beliefs on diabetes is the cause for avoiding breastfeeding; 3) bottle-feeding is a way of keeping the baby from starving; 4) the familys positive perception is a condition for the practice of successful breastfeeding; 5) indiscriminate promotion of mothers milk substitutes is one of the causes for early abandonment of breastfeeding; 6) poor information and constraints on breastfeeding discourage the will to breastfeed. It was concluded that constructing a theoretical model of care contributes to bring into the caring field some tools that allow nursing practitioners to use health care practices culturally congruent with diabetic womens beliefs and
