Strategic approach in the thesis tutorial: An alternative model for learning research in the graduate program. The strategic approach for teaching-learning process, has created a great expectation in the academic community because promotes a conscious and comprehensive learning of the content and the appropriation of strategies for the autonomous and permanent students learning. In this paper is analyzed the problem of low research competence achieved by students in some education graduate program in Venezuelan universities which seems to be associated to the tutorial traditional model used. The SMT (tutorial Mediation Systems) model is presented here as an example to illustrate the application of the strategic approach of instruction in research learning at the university, in the thesis elaboration context. This model constitutes a proposal to be successful as a thesis adviser. The author has applied it In 15 Venezuelan higher education institution between 1993 and 2005. The model has been operationalized into a program for thesis adviser training with 208 hours of theoretic and practical academic activities, grouped in eight modules, as follow: The SMT tutorial model, paradigm and research methods, cognitive ant meta cognitive strategies, research project planning, design and validation of measurement instruments, quantitative data analysis and elaboration of scientific report. It is concluded that SM&T tutorial model has a double functions for one hand, it acts as a guide for the non-expert adviser to help him in conducting successfully his/her tutorial function and, in the other hand, it has a heuristic function that make possible to conduct research in this field taking in to account the general hypothesis been assumed in the tutorial model.
