Higher education or university education emerges as the most important reference for cultural and social growth given it was the first educational level formally established. Thus the issue of admission has always been conditioned to the fulfillment of several requirements. In this regard, higher education has frequently been pointed out as being elitist and classist. Clearly the transformation of the State and the political ideals prevailing in each specific time as well as the philosophycal and scientific trends have significantly influenced the set of admission requeriments implemented by its institutions. The aim of this study, which is based on a documentary research, is to make a brief historical review of admission to higher education in Venezuela, based on the precept of the teaching state and its influence on the Colonial University and the Republican University during the XVIII and XIX centuries, two historical moments that defined venezuelan society at the political, social and educational level.
