Abstract

FLORES, Carmen Alida  and  MARTIN, María. Learing to Read and to Write in Preschool. . SAPIENS [online]. 2006, vol.7, n.1, pp.69-80. ISSN 1317-5815.

Preschool is the educational level responsible for fulfilling objectives in the social, intellectual, affective and motor fields that are intimately related to the preparation of the student for formal schooling. It is not a first grade for small kids, and teaching to read and to write is not one of its objectives. The teacher, however, should not sit still waiting for the child to get into first grade, the child’s introduction to the reading and writing skills should not be limited, on the contrary the child should be introduced to the written world (newspapers, signs, tales, books …) at an early age so that from his experiences in this field he may build the written language system; the teacher should be the promotor of his development, and should focus on finding, creating or fostering situations that will allow the student to face the most adequate experiences for him. On the part of the teacher, introducing the students to written language should imply a knowledge of the learning process in this level and taking into account the experiences of the children at home and in preschool, as well as the individual expectations and differences so as to make the appropriate pedagogical decision.
