Abstract
MORALES, Ana María. The Age of Cochlear Implants: the end of Deafness? Some Considerations for its Study. SAPIENS [online]. 2006, vol.7, n.2, pp.159-170. ISSN 1317-5815.
This article introduces some considerations in relation to the use of cochlear implants in people with hearing impairments, especially deaf children, in order to reach a pedagogical, linguistic and ethical reflection. A historical analysis of the education for the deaf is presented in terms of the two paradigms that have characterized its development: the Oral-based Conception and the Socio-Anthropological Conception, their most striking aspects and their implications on the educational practice. Likewise, a definition of the cochlear implants is provided, including the requirements, the procedures and the problems for its application. Finally, based on both the teaching practice and the realities of the deaf community, an opinion is offered.
