SERRES VOISIN, Yolanda. Introduction to the learning of algebra and its consequences for teaching. SAPIENS [online]. 2011, vol.12, n.1, pp.122-142. ISSN 1317-5815.
The purpose of this work is to analyze what school algebra means, and how language and algebraic thinking relate and we want to analyze the initiation of the learning of algebra, relating the processes of generalization and symbolization to the development of the concepts of variable, to the resolution of problems and to the use of calculators. In conclusion we obtain the need of: ( a) identifying and promoting the use of generalization strategies as a central activity of school algebra, waiting for the propitious time to purchase the symbology of mathematics, ( b ) designing activities to work the variables from their different uses , ( c ) working the resolution of problems as a way of identifying the need for the use of variables and ( d ) promoting the use of calculators to develop algebraic thinking through the communication of the mathematical ideas.
Palabras clave : generalization; symbolization; development of algebraic thinking; concept of variable resolution of problems.
