Abstract

The objective of this paper is to analyze the shortening as a resource of word formation in the youth speech. The methodology used was qualitative fieldwork. The sample consisted of 60 university students aged between 17 and 20 years. The technique used was a two sessions workshop during the class "Language II" at Simon Bolivar University, which allowed to obtaining the corpus of the research. The Data were analyzed on the basis of grammatical criteria. In the process of word formation, contextual elements of the youth are involved such as the media, social and cultural changes, in addition other words are created to designate: places, family, objects, meetings, emotional states, social networks.
