Abstract

IRATO ZEA, Elvia C. Student teacher training in Counselling skills: an urgent need. SAPIENS [online]. 2015, vol.16, n.1, pp.103-119. ISSN 1317-5815.

School counselling is considered as one of the fundamental areas of the educational process, where it occupies an important time and space (Ianni, 2003), since the student-teacher must be provided with an adequate formation that will take him to insert effectively in the social and labour worlds and personal behaviour (Carrillo, 2006). This is one of the reasons why the area of school guidance or school counselling must be immersed within the curricular design of any university teacher training institution (García-Nieto, 2002; Davalillo, 2004; Segura, 2005; Irato, 2008), since the teacher is who must assume the role of guiding his students, because of the great shortage of guidance counselors who currently exist in Venezuelan schools and lyceums (Villa, 2013). In this sense, the student-teacher must appropriate knowledge and strategies, tools that will help him/her to develop potentialities that will enable him/her to exercise the role of teacher-counselor or develop his function as a guide for future students. Therefore, the purpose of this article is to highlight the requirement to train the student-teacher in the school counselling skills, especially those teachers on formation at the Pedagogical Institute of Miranda “José Manuel Siso Martínez” (IPMJMSM) attached to the Universidad Pedagógica Experimental Libertador (UPEL). This paper is part of an extensive study on Education and Guidance, which was conducted as a documentary monographic research. Among the conclusions are: (a) The performance on the role of school counselor is paramount for students of teaching; (b) The teacher and the guidance counselor must develop teamwork practice; (c) The relevance and importance of following compulsory courses in the area of school counselling skills for student-teachers, in particular those at the IPMJMSM-UPEL, is justified.

Keywords : teacher´s training; teacher-counselor´s role; educational guidance.
