Rev. Venez. Endocrinol. Metab. [online]. 2013, vol.11, n.2, pp.67-75. ISSN 1690-3110.

Objective: To evaluate the nutritional status of children and adolescents with diabetes mellitus type 1 (DM type 1) treated as outpatients in the Omar Torrijos Herrera Hospital of the Panama Social Security System. Methods: this is an observational, descriptive, cross-sectional study. We recruited 108 subjects with DM type 1 (53% female, 7±4 years), 38.9% preschool age children, 38% school age children and 23.1% adolescents. We calculated the Z-score for weight-for-height (WHZ), weight-for-age (WAZ), height-for-age (HAZ) and body mass index (BMI)-for-age (BAZ), according to the World Health Organization (WHO) growth standards 2006. Results: According to WHZ (preschool-age children; n=42), 34(81%) had normal nutritional status, 3(7.1%) had mild undernutrition, and 5(11.9%) overweight; no significant difference was found for sex. According to WAZ (preschool and school-age children; n=83), 76(91.6%) had normal nutritional status, 7(8.4%) overweight; no significant differences were found for sex and age group. According to HAZ (all subjects; n=108), 89(92.4%) had adequate height-for-age and 19(17.6%) showed slight lineal growth retardation, being significantly different in females (p<0.01) and adolescents (p<0.01), and according to BAZ (all subjects), 81(75%) had normal nutritional status, 5(4.6%) mild undernutrition, 22(20.4%) overweight, mild undernutrition was significantly higher in preschool age children (p <0.01) and overweight in school age children (p <0.01). Conclusions: we found a high proportion of normal nutritional status in subjects with DM type 1. Despite finding a low proportion of lineal growth retardation, it was more significant in girls and adolescents. School-age children have a higher proportion of overweight using BAZ.
