Abstract

This investigation aimed to study maternal mortality in the Coros University Hospital "Dr. Alfredo Van Grieken, Miranda Municipality, Falcon State, the years 2005 to 2009. Maternal mortality is a major public health problem worldwide, despite the World Health Organization insists that the vast majority can be avoided, occurring about 550,000 maternal deaths each year worldwide because of complications treated during pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum. The focus of this research is quantitative, with a field design. This research result was that the age group which had the highest number of maternal deaths include the 18 to 35 years. The hospital maternal mortality rate for 2005 was 1.20 maternal deaths per 1000 live births registered in 2006 was 1.20, for 2007 was 0.60, for 2008 was 0.40 and in 2009 was 2.20 maternal deaths per 1000 live births registered. Were analyzed by the Committee of 100% of medical records. The most frequent obstetric complications were bleeding disorders, preeclampsia and eclampsia and infection. The main recommendations were to empower the Committees of Health and Social Networks in promoting the health of mothers and children and strengthen the comprehensive care of mother and children in the first and second level care.
