Abstract

RUIZ MEJIA, Camilo. Polymorphisms and genetic damage: a step in the understanding chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Comunidad y Salud [online]. 2015, vol.13, n.2, pp.66-74. ISSN 1690-3293.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is a very common condition and represents a public health problem worldwide. Many risk factors have been found to be associated with the disease, including smoking, age, sex, air pollution, occupation and socioeconomic status. It is clinically characterized by presence of chronic and progressive obstruction and inflammation of the airways, which manifests with symptoms consistent in dyspnea, cough, and decline in forced expiratory volume in 1 second. Treatment of this disease is based on the use of bronchodilators and inhaled corticosteroids to control the degree of obstruction and inflammation respectively. Recent studies have found that there is a genetic predisposition for developing the disease, and that polymorphisms in genes that codify enzymes involved in the repairing process of DNA (OGG1 and XRCC1) are associated with a higher level of DNA damage mediated by oxidizing agents. It has also been shown that pollutant particles cause alterations in the genetic material of individuals with the disease

Keywords : Polymorphism Genetic; DNA Damage.
