Abstract
CACERES G., José Luis et al. Rapid environmental evaluation as a procedure of environmental surveillance at Sorocaima II, municipio Mariño, state Aragua, Venezuela. Bol Mal Salud Amb [online]. 2007, vol.47, n.1, pp.139-148. ISSN 1690-4648.
A rapid environmental evaluation was carried out during 2006 in 76 dwellings in the locality of Sorocaima II, Municipality of Santiago Mariño, Aragua State, to learn its environmental conditions. The vulnerability, the condition of the environment, the quality of public services and the characteristics of the contamination were evaluated. A score of 83 points suggests that this is a community "with problems" even though close to the values of a "positive situation" meaning that it is not exposed to contamination, that there is little probability of environmental changes adverse to human health and that public institutions give good service. However, moderate and high scores for some variables such as air pollution, noise pollution, and the threat to flora and fauna make their treatment necessary to consolidate a better quality of life of the community, by means of protection by official means of flora and fauna in the locality, the cleaning and maintenance of roads after the winter season and at the end of new constructionbecause the displacement of solid residues cause contamination and possibly are the cause of morbidity from diseases of the respiratory system.
