In the Valencia Colombian municipality, the prevalence of malaria is high. For the year 2004 the number of registered cases was 3,027, of which 75.7% were produced by Plasmodium vivax, 13.1% were produced by Plasmodium falciparum and 11.2% were mixed cases. This study was conducted in Mieles medio, Mieles abajo, San Rafael and Santo Domingo veredas belonging to the Valencia municipality, Cordoba State north of Colombia. A cross sectional survey to identify Anopheles species, biting activity and breeding sites was developed. An adult mosquitos survey was conducted using protected human bait traps inside and outside houses. Larvae sampling was done in breeding sites around houses. A total of 203 adult Anopheles mosquitoes belonging to four species were collected: Anopheles (Nyssorhynchus) nuneztovari, (91.1%), Anopheles (Anopheles) neomaculipalpus (4.4%), Anopheles pseudopunctipennis (4.0%) and Anopheles (Nyssorhynchus) evansae (0.5%). Anopheles nuneztovari showed the highest biting frequency outside houses at 21:00 hrs and was found with the highest density in the positive breeding sites. Results suggest that An. nuneztovari could be a vector of malaria in this study area.
