REYES, Adriana et al. Diagnosis of Herpetomonas sp. in Musca domestica, and its implication on larval therapy. Bol Mal Salud Amb [online]. 2010, vol.50, n.2, pp.315-318. ISSN 1690-4648.

Herpetomonas are insect parasites. Although they usually are not pathogenic to man, now they have become very important due to the use of barium species of flies in larval therapy and there are new reports of HIV coinfection of Herpetomonas sp. in whom a similar clinical symptoms and one which causes visceral leishmaniasis and diffuse cutaneous leishmaniasis. From a colony of Musca domestica, mounted in the city of Trujillo Venezuela, took out the search of the protozoan along the entire digestive tract of adult and immature, resulting Herpetomonas positive. sp 90% of those reviewed. The presence of parasites, both Herpetomonas spp. as Octosporea sp. was confirmed by Giemsa staining of smears from intestinal homogenates of adult flies and immature stages. We recommend the use of molecular tools for diagnosis of leishmaniasis in areas of high incidence of AIDS and leishmaniasis are endemic to rule out cross-infection.
