We report the species richness of anophelines (Diptera: Culicidae) occurring in the main aquatic habitats (lotic and lentic) of northwestern Amazonas, currently, one of the main endemic areas for malaria in Venezuela. Overall, 10 species of the genus Anopheles Meigen were identified. The dominant subgenus Nyssorhynchus Blanchard was represented by six species, followed by Anopheles Meigen and Stethomyia Theobald, both having two species. Among the species collected, we highlight An. (Nyssorhynchus) darlingi Root and An. (Nyssorhynchus) albitarsis Lynch Arribalzaga sensu lato. The former is the main vector of Plasmodium in the region and the second one has been incriminated as a malaria vector in Bolívar State. This study extends the current list of anopheline species of the Atures municipality and provides a more complete picture of the distribution of the mosquitoes of the Venezuelan Guiana Shield region.
