Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death globally, with hypertension (HTA) the most common risk factor Objective: To determine the prevalence of acute myocardial infarction (IAM) in hypertensive patients at the University Hospital Dr. Alfredo Van Grieken of Falcon State. Materials and methods: A retrospective cross-sectional study. We reviewed the medical records of patients admitted to the Department of Internal Medicine for the period 2002-2005 and were selected to patients with a diagnosis of AMI according to the American College of Cardiology / American Heart Association Task Force. Results: The IAM was presented in 195 patients, of whom 121 were hypertensive: 80 (66%) male and 41 (34%) female. The age group most frequently in men was that of 50-59 years (24.79%) and women 60-69 years (14.04%). Hypertensive crisis was detected in 56.2% to hospital admission. The 36.36% referred receiving antihypertensive therapy regularly. The most common topographic location of AMI was lower (45.4%) followed by the previous extensive with 26.4%. Conclusions: The HTA is a major risk factor for the development of ischemic heart disease in our midst, with the male population most affected and presenting a progressive increase with age. The hypertensive emergency was responsible for more than half the cases, which requires a good control of hypertension to reduce the development of cardiovascular complications.
