The metabolic syndrome (SM) is a high and increasing prevalence, associated with increased risk for diabetes mellitus 2 and cardiovascular disease. Objective: To determine the prevalence of SM and its components as defined by the American Heart Association / National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (AHA / NHLBI), in hypertensive patients from the highlands falconiana. Materials and methods: Prospective study of cross. It estimated the prevalence of SM according to the criteria of the AHA / NHLBI in the hypertensive population Curimagua and Cabure of Falcon State. Results: SM was presented in 81 (62%) of the subjects studied, 32 (40%) men and 49 (60%) women. Patients aged between 40 and 59 years were the hardest hit, men 22 (69%) and females 19 (39%). The central obesity was more common in women 54.3% compared to men 18.5%. Hypertriglyceridemia metabolic abnormality was the most common (93.82%) and hyperglycemia the less frequent (46.9%). The low concentration of HDL was presented in 65.43% of patients. Conclusion: There is a high prevalence of SM in hypertensive patients of the Sierra falconiana, predominantly female, being necessary to implement strategies to promote change in the lifestyle of these patients.
