D’AMORE, Sofía et al. Tooth abnormalities in pediatric patients of Kavanayén, Bolívar - Venezuela. Rev Odontoped Latinoam [online]. 2024, vol.14, e-234637.  Epub 02-Abr-2025. ISSN 2174-0798.  https://doi.org/10.47990/xfw0e849.

Introduction:

Dental anomalies result from alterations in odontogenesis, generating variations in size, shape, structure or number of teeth, being more prevalent in permanent dentition.

Objective:

To describe dental alterations in shape, number and tooth eruption in children and adolescents in the Pemón - Arekuna indigenous population of Kavanayén, Bolívar State - Venezuela, in April 2023.

Materials and methods:

This research is descriptive, field-based, with a cross-sectional design. The data were collected in an epidemiological survey, during a medical-dental activity conducted by the Mayū Project Foundation in Kavanayén, Bolívar State - Venezuela in April 2023. The sample was selected at convenience including all children between the ages of 7 months and 17 years, prior informed consent, registering the anomalies of shape, number and eruption detected.

Results:

179 patients, 102 girls and 77 boys, were clinically evaluated. Alterations in dental development were identified in 8 patients, with a prevalence of 4.47%, including 2 (1.12%) patients with shape alterations, 2 (1.12%) patients with hyperodontia and 2 (1.12%) with hypodontia. The prevalence of eruption alterations was 3.35% (6 patients).

Conclusions:

The alterations in shape, number and eruption of teeth clinically evaluated in the Pemón - Arekuna indigenous population of Kavanayén presented a prevalence similar to other populations. This prevalence may be underestimated since radiographic information was not available.
