Objective:

To identify knowledge, perceptions, and beliefs about menstruation in rural areas among adolescent girls, identifying factors that influence access to information and menstrual hygiene management.

Methods:

This was a non-experimental, descriptive, cross-sectional, quantitative field study conducted with a questionnaire survey of 116 students. Justification: This study focuses on rural adolescent girls in Cupira and menstrual health as a public health issue. This is because poor education and lack of knowledge about the menstrual cycle pose risks to physical health, school absenteeism, and unwanted pregnancies.

Results:

The average age at menarche was 12.9 years; 85.34% of women had never been to a gynecological consultation and obtained information from their mothers or other female relatives. A conceptual confusion was identified between menstruation and the menstrual cycle. The use of sanitary napkins was predominant, with little familiarity with alternatives such as tampons and menstrual cups. 54.31% reported school absenteeism due to physical discomfort or social stigma.

Conclusions:

These findings reveal limitations in access to education and menstruation management, confirming the need to address it as a public health issue due to its impact on the well-being of adolescents.
