SCOTTO, Alba. Social representations and dialogue of knowledge for sustainability. Case: hydrographic basin of the Panama Canal. Areté [online]. 2023, vol.9, n.18, pp.79-103. Epub 08-Dic-2023. ISSN 2443-4566. https://doi.org/10.55560/arete.2023.18.9.4.
The Chagres National Park contributes 40% of the water required for the operation of the Panama Canal, and 80% of the potable water for the human consumption in the capital. It covers almost a third of the surface area of the Canal Basin and it is affected by an increasing anthropogenic pressure. The research explored the social representations about territory, development and sustainability of the inhabitants of the Park. The study is qualitative, with a phenomenological approach. Semi-structured interviews and discourse analysis were used, with an emergent categorization process. It is concluded that the social representations of territory and development are clear and shared; in the first case, the experiences of well-being stand out for the benefits that nature provides; in the second, it is linked to public services and sources of work, and the satisfaction of basic needs. In the case of sustainability and sustainable development, the senses are diffuse, which contrasts with the clear, unveiled image of environmental protection. From the meanings revealed the conceptual, axiological and methodological guidelines for an educational proposal based on the dialogue of knowledge for the sustainability.
