Abstract
FERRADA FERRADA, Cristian Andrés; ALTAMIRANO RUIZ, Natalia Andrea and KROFF TRUJILLO, Francisco José. The school enrollment in Castro, Quinchao, and Curaco de Vélez, in Chiloé, has shown significant changes between 2011 and 2024, influenced by factors such as internal migration and educational policies. This study analyzes these transformations within a segmented Chilean educational context, aiming to understand the decline of students in rural areas and its impact on educational continuity and the socioeconomic structure of communities. Using a quantitative and descriptive approach, the study examines statistical data from the Ministry of Education of Chile, comparing enrollment in urban and rural schools. Results indicate a downward trend in rural schools, while urban schools experience a slight increase. Factors such as migration to cities, perceptions of educational quality, and funding policies contribute to this situation. The study concludes that rural education faces serious challenges regarding retention and sustainability. It recommends implementing policies to improve infrastructure and educational quality in these contexts, as well as monitoring enrollment to ensure equitable access to education.
